There has been much discussion lately about the role of iOS devices
in the gaming ecosystem. And while they’re certainly getting their foot –
or an entire leg, for that matter – in the door of the casual gaming
market, iOS devices are nowhere near replacing some good ol’ hardcore PC
or console gaming. But apps can be created that allow our iOS devices
to be of some help while we play real games.
That being said, IGN has released a new and useful guide for all of you Skyrim players out there. The app offers a variety of content to help players navigate through the massive, interactive world of Skyrim such as interactive maps, a wiki guide, a newsfeed, videos, and even some wallpapers for the novelty of it. Coming soon in a future release of the app is also a skill tree planner, so that should be helpful as well. The interactive map displays a nice map of the Skyrim universe, and allows you to glance at items, unique items, skill books, and treasure maps.
The wiki allows you to refer and learn more about the many facets of the Skyrim universe in an easy-to-refer to format (and it’s often updated, too), the newsfeed keeps you up to date on the latest Skyrim-related news (a la Steam’s newsfeed when a game is selected, for you PC gamers out there), videos presents a bunch of Skyrim-related video content hand-picked by IGN as being noteworthy and informative (or entertaining), and wallpapers, well, gives you some iPad Skyrim swag to pimp your lock screen.
As of right now, the app is only available for the iPad, but it is noted in the app description that an iPhone app is in the works as well. The app is Retina-optimized, so those of you who are using the new iPad can enjoy it in divine Retina glory.
Skyrim, relased on November 11th 2011 is the fifth Elder Scrolls title, and has been quite successful. Not only did it receive dashingly positive reviews from game critics, but it also shipped over 7 million copies to retailers within the first week of launch. Retail sales even topped $3.4 million within the first two days of availability. Quite impressive.
Also awesome is that the app is free for a limited time, so Skyrim addicts, grab it! No arrows will be dispatched to any of your knees, promise (sorry, I had to).
