Update On iOS 5.1 Untethered Jailbreak For iPhone, iPad, iPod touch

It seems like only yesterday that the jailbreak dream team dropped the good news by announcing the release of an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 that would bring liberation and freedom to those who were using an iPhone 4S or iPad 2 powered by Apple’s A5 chip. It was in fact over eight weeks ago and although it was a huge accomplishment by all involved to release the Absinthe jailbreak, the community is once again focusing all eyes on the development teams hoping for a jailbreak which covers iOS 5.1.
With the release of the new iPad, along with the updated 5.1 version of iOS, Apple have once again thrown the proverbial cat amongst the pigeons; meaning that researcher Pod2g and his band of merry jailbreaking men will need to get their thinking caps on once again. The release of the new iPad can be treated as a special beast due to the fact that it features Apple’s new A5X processor, but it is no secret that iPhone Dev Team leader MuscleNerd, German security researcher Stefan Esser and iOS developer Grant Paul have all succeeded in jailbreaking the third-generation iPad but unfortunately not through methods that make it a viable and distributable option.
Keeping in line with his tradition of letting the public know on what exactly is happening behind the scenes, famed French iOS researcher Pod2g has taken to his Twitter timeline to let his followers and the wider iOS community know that there is currently no ETA for when the untethered jailbreak will arrive for iOS 5.1. Pod2g is putting countless hours into trying to find usable vulnerabilities and is actively working alongside the Chronic Dev Team in pursuit of iOS vulnerabilities that will hopefully yield significant results.
While the final jailbreak is in no way in sight, the pieces of the puzzle have begun to come together due to the fact that they have a number of the pieces which will ultimately form a userland jailbreak. The individuals involved will continue to work together in the hope that the as the days progress, the puzzle becomes a little easier to put together, resulting in the release of an untethered iOS 5.1 jailbreak for all A5 devices. Until then, remain patient and have faith that liberation awaits us.
For the time being, those of you running the older, A4 devices (i.e. iPhone 4, iPad 1, iPod touch), can jailbreak the latest iOS 5.1 (tethered) by following the instructions posted here to jailbreak using Redsn0w, or here using Sn0wbreeze. For jailbreaking iPhone 4S and iPad 2, you can simply follow our step by step tutorial posted here to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 using Absinthe on Windows or Mac. Those of you with an iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1, and iPod touches can use Redsn0w or Sn0wbreeze to untether jailbreak on iOS 5.0.1.
